Shell Carving
James Monaco
I carve things other than repurposed beef bone. Shell is one of my more challenging materials. I love abalone because of the natural rainbows of light in the pearly opalized surface. They are just beautiful.
Just a warning. Carving shell creates a sharp, caustic, dangerous sort-of dust, so you don’t do this without the proper equipment including a respiratory mask.
My more customary carvings are made from repurposed beef bone. But I also create pieces out of shed deer antler, shell and have been adding some resin inlay to a few pieces.
